The Ogeechee tupelo (Nyssa ogeche) finds its home along the meandering rivers, swamps, and marshes of the American South. Also called the river lime and wild lime, this hardwood flowers in the spring, with buds that explode with dozens of thin pistols that exude sweet tupelo nectar. In the fall, as the leaves of the tupelo glow in shades of cherry red, the mature fruit—called Ogeechee lime—change in color from rusty red to a deep blue before falling into the waterways to seek a dry spot to take root.
